Thoughts Before Bed, a poem by Drem

from 2012

“The machine

that makes noise

to sleep away

the teardrops

that cry from your eyes

multiply into

a generation.

Folds of water

feed into the ocean

by the machines you make

get tired,

but not by the sound

of metal.

Rather, it’s the ideas

that go through

the mind

of the maker’s life

without pills needed

to keep their mood stabilized,

or their worries of their future offspring

not having

beauty present

at the moment

of conception.

Plastic surgery is expensive.

Silly could-bes,

could-have-beens,

closing eyes

that they think at night.

Impossible dreams.

How nonsense lullabies

deepen our need

to feed the impossible.

That’s what makes us sleep.

Machines.”
